A bonus: the Chippewa Nature Center has a full calendar of events, like the Fall Harvest Festival on October 1st! This special day includes “demonstrations, crafts and activities that reflect 19th century farm life during harvest season.”
These special tours are a short half-an-hour drive from Saginaw and give you the chance to experience "authentic tall ship sailing.” They offer two public sailing excursions, each with a different focus. The Great Lakes 101 tour includes fun facts about the area and some history lessons as you sail from Bay City into Saginaw Bay. You can also enjoy Sunset Sails and view the stunning sunset from Saginaw Bay while you enjoy snacks and refreshments. With either tour, you’ll enjoy incredible views of nature along the coast of the bay.
Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge
The incredible Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge is 10,000 acres, which means plenty of land to explore in the fall. This location has some unique highlights. One is the Wildlife Drive auto tour, a route that you can drive intended to give you chances to glimpse the wild animals roaming the refuge. Another fun feature is the opportunity to see all kinds of birds. It’s actually designated as an Important Bird Area by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
If you’re looking for a longer fall experience, then you can check out this road trip created by Michigan.org. They provide a step-by-step road trip itinerary that gorgeous sights like Lake Huron and unique stops like antique shops and farmers markets. Stops along the way include Bad Axe, Bay City, and, of course, Saginaw!
If you live at Camelot Place, there is a trailhead less than 10 minutes away! This is a great location for all kinds of recreational activities, such as “hiking, bicycling, jogging, walking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, and nature study.” This rail trail covers over 9 miles and offers plenty of views of surrounding wooded areas and wetlands, perfect for checking out some fall foliage.
